What is Post-Transition Estate Planning™

Post-transition estate planning™ refers to the preparation done before the estate transfers to heirs. Professional financial planners and advisors are proficient in transferring an estate’s monetary value to the heirs and beneficiaries, as illustrated in the diagram below under “Pre-transition planning©”. Yet little attention is given to building family trust and communication as well as clarifying the family mission for the estate (see diagram below under “Post-transition planning©”.)

Why It’s Important
Less than one-third of all family businesses survive into the second generation, and only one out of ten make it to the third generation.  Without the proper tools and knowledge offered by the Institute for Preparing Heirs, most families and advisors are ill-equipped to predict and prevent poor post-transition© performance.

On a broader scale, family-owned businesses form the backbone of the American economy. It has been widely reported in recent years that one-third of the Fortune 500 companies are family controlled and account for nearly two-thirds of the nation’s employment. Yet, we fail miserably when it comes to keeping these businesses in the family. Consider the turmoil this creates for the ordinary worker in the ranks of the private wealth holdings.
